Building Fish-X, a Fisheries DataSpace and Insight Platform

The project entails the development of a Fisheries DataSpace (Fish-X) and Insight Platform – based on smart orchestrated architecture and open interoperable technology via Gaia-X – that will enable users to implement data to improve fishing methods, increase yields, protect endangered fisheries stocks and streamline MCS processes supporting the implementation of the CFP.

About Fish-X

Fish-X is a global consortium of 10 partners from Germany, France, Croatia, Portugal and Belgium. Their aim is to enable data-driven decisions, knowledge sharing, stakeholder education and positive impact on the journey towards a sustainable fisheries sector as laid out in the EU Green Deal: “European farmers and fishers are key to managing the transition [to a more sustainable food policy]. The Farm to Fork Strategy will strengthen their efforts to tackle climate change, protect the environment and preserve biodiversity.”

Together We Solve

The process of developing a collaborative grant application to secure grant funding from horizon Europe needs careful management. The partners first formed a core group who were able to scope the project, identify missing skills and invite collaborators to the consortium.

Successful Outcomes

The consortium has a shared vision to produce a user-friendly, open, interoperable and integrated portal that improves on Google’s Global Fishing Watch project by utilising:

  • European Excellency: Knowledge in the Fishing Sector from world-leading organisations such as Sciaena and World Wildlife Foundation (project partners)
  • Novel and existing infrastructure: Extensive monitoring of fishing activity across the globe based on existing infrastructure which will be complemented by cutting-edge technology (use cases). Project partner North.io provides the link to MARISPACE-X, it being a lead partner in that funded project.
  • State-of-the-Art Intelligence: Advanced predictive models based on novel applications of big data, machine learning and AI-technology. To be developed and delivered by CLS, North.io and OURZ.
  • Data Security and Sovereignty: Using European standards, servers and complying with EU regulations on the use of data.

“This was the first time we worked with the team and we won the Horizon Europe grant funding! CLS will now lead a €5m project over the next 3 years with an exciting consortium addressing key issues on sustainable fishing across Europe.”
